Description

This deck of cards divides the suits up by themes found in Hiroshige’s “Fifty-three Tôkaidô Stages.” Spades are “challenging” moments seen in perilous points, hardships and pensive moods of the journey; diamonds are the “scenic views” of the sights and landscapes of the journey; clovers are “actions” that recount the dynamism of the journey; and hearts depict the “pleasures” of the journey seen in travelers sampling local specialties, etc. The artist, Hiroshige Utagawa first studied under the landscape artist Toyohiro Utagawa in his early teens. In July 1832, at the age of 36, he got the chance to travel the Tôkaido to Kyoto by joining an envoy on its way to present horses to the emperor. During this trip, he made sketches for his “Fifty-three Tôkaidô Stages,” which he released the following year in 1833 and propelled him to fame. The series was a big hit and a long seller over 30 years. This deck displays those pieces.
