In 1918, during the Ukrainian People's Republic, the government set its top priorities: a national currency, its own coat of arms, and playing cards.
The heroes of Narbut's card deck sketches were Ukrainian characters: a peasant woman, a townswoman, and historical figures. The kings were Cossack leaders, the queens were noble ladies, and the jacks were the artist himself and his secular friends.
The sketches for the playing cards were approved by Skoropadsky's government. The author received 700 karbovanets for each figure, but in those turbulent years, the deck was never published.

Героями ескізів колоди карт Нарбута були українські типажі: селянка, міщанка та історичні постаті. Королі - козацькі лідери, дами - шляхетні пані, валети - сам художник та його світські друзі.
Ескізи гральних карт були затверджені урядом Скоропадського. Автор за кожну фігуру отримав по 700 карбованців, але в ті буремні роки колода так і не була видана.
