Your court awaits and it's time to take your place in history.
Step back in time to the medieval courts of Europe, where every card tells a story of power, prestige, and tradition. Hofämterspiel Cards are not just a deck of playing cards, they are a window into the past, offering a rare glimpse into the fascinating world of knights, kings, and courtly politics.
Hofämterspiel Cards (translated to “Courtly Household Cards”) date back to c.1450 and are the predecessor to modern playing cards, featuring four suits with a King and Queen at the top of their hierarchy. These cards are one of the best preserved decks which have survived in their entirety.
Playing cards have been used for centuries but the Hofämterspiel cards predate the oldest set of playing cards with a modern arrangement (1-10, J, Q, K). The Hofämterspiel cards are not just playing cards - they are historical artifacts that offer insight into the medieval world, its social structure, and its symbolism. They were originally commissioned by King Ladislaus the Posthumous. The original cards are currently housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Austria.
Digitally restored full deck of Hofämterspiel consisting of 48 cards. Traditional playing card size (63.5 x 88.9mm/3.5 x 2.5in) Perfect for modern game play and appreciating the artwork.
