The Story Behind Skulls & Roses Playing Cards

Hello, I’m Bruce Di Quinzio, founder of Kardgic Playing Cards. Born in Montreal, Canada, I’ve always been drawn to the unseen threads that connect life, death, and what lies beyond.

My journey began at the age of eight, when a sleight-of-hand expert placed a Svengali deck in my hands. That moment sparked something deeper than curiosity. It opened a door into the world of mystery, transformation, and illusion.

Since then, I’ve immersed myself in the art of magic, cardistry, and the creation of playing cards. Along the way, I’ve built lasting connections with artists, designers, and magicians around the world. Each collaboration has deepened my belief that playing cards can be more than just tools for entertainment, they can be symbols, artefacts, and reflections of something greater.

Skulls & Roses is my third project, following The Big Bang and Rave: Location Unknown. But this one carries a different kind of weight. During the stillness of the pandemic, I found myself turning inward, asking bigger questions. What is transformation? What comes after? What are we, really?

To me, death is not an ending but a transition. A shift in vibration. A return to something ancient and eternal. This philosophy inspired every detail of Skulls & Roses. The skulls represent change, the quiet dissolution of form. The roses are life’s delicate defiance, symbols of beauty and fragility blooming in the face of time.

The design draws inspiration from the stained glass windows of 17th-century cathedrals and the ornate decks once held by noble kings and queens. It’s a tribute to the past and an invitation to contemplate what lies ahead.

Skulls & Roses is not just a deck. It’s a meditation on life, death, and the sacred tension between them. A tactile reminder that what we hold in our hands can carry meaning far beyond the material.
