These limited edition playing cards were named for the Tuscan region of Italy from which they originate. They were created 1850 just as the Victorian Age was making card and parlor games the greatest past time. The designer of these cards was then a well-known caricaturist, Adolfo Matarelli ( 1832-1877 ). Matarelli himself seems to have moved obscurity, but the rare and clever designs of his Toscana playing cards are once again providing a favorite among players and collectors. Made in Italy for Cavallini & Co. San Francisco. As it appeared in 1850, the deck comes in a lightweight wooden drop lid box, covered with hand painted paper and designed by DANIEL ONFRAY. It includes a RED WAX SEAL on lid.
