In the antiquity, Partenone (or Parthènope) was a mermaid worshipped as patron goddess of the city of Naples. The city changed its name from Parthenope to Palepolis (old city) and then to Neapolis (new city), but even today it's known as Partenopean city and its citizens are called Partenopeans.
