G. K. Andersen's playing cards, designed by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II.
The Queen found inspiration for the playing cards in the fairy tale "The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep." This happened when the Queen was designing the sets and costumes for a television production of the fairy tale, in which a deck of playing cards invites everyone to dance.
The format of the playing cards corresponds to that used in Denmark in the mid-1800s, when Hans Christian Andersen was revered and even served as a courtier.
The Queen gave the Danish Refugee Council the opportunity to sell the playing cards to benefit humanitarian aid for refugees.
The Danish Refugee Council is a private humanitarian organization that works for the benefit of refugees in Denmark and abroad. It cooperates, in particular, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
