The story of Scotland’s fight for independence is not written in ink alone — it is carved into stone, sung in ballads, and whispered across the highlands by the wind itself. It is a tale of courage, of betrayal, of love and loss, and of a people who refused to surrender their land or their freedom. At the heart of that story stands William Wallace, the Guardian of Scotland. His defiance against tyranny ignited a flame that could not be extinguished, a flame that would burn through generations until Scotland stood free.
As an artist, I’ve always been fascinated by the way history and legend intertwine, and how stories can be told not only with words, but with pictures, symbols, and design. With the Wallace Playing Card Deck, I wanted to create more than just a deck of cards — I wanted to craft a tribute to this epic struggle, one that collectors and players alike could hold in their hands and feel connected to a story greater than themselves.
Each card has been carefully designed in a medieval woodcut style, inspired by the manuscripts and carvings of the age. Within its suits live the heroes and villains of the Wars of Independence: Wallace himself, his beloved Marion Braidfute whose tragic death spurred him to rebellion, and Andrew Moray, his steadfast ally at Stirling Bridge. Alongside them stand Robert the Bruce, Elizabeth de Burgh, and Sir James “The Black” Douglas, whose loyalty and sacrifice carried the cause forward. And looming against them, the shadow of Edward “Longshanks” of England, his heirs, and the traitors who turned their backs on their people. Together, they form a living tapestry of rebellion, sacrifice, crown, and betrayal — a kingdom divided, yet never defeated.
This project is also deeply personal to me. I’ve poured my passion for history, storytelling, and design into every line and every card. My goal was not only to make something beautiful, but to create a piece of history you can actually shuffle, deal, and play with — a deck that tells a story every time you hold it.
The Alba Edition is rendered in a striking monochromatic palette, bold and uncompromising, like the iron will of Scotland’s heroes. It is simple, stark, and timeless — a reflection of the raw determination at the heart of the cause.
Wallace is more than a deck of playing cards. It is a piece of art, a retelling of legend, and a reminder of what it means to fight for freedom. I’m honored to share this project with you, and I can’t wait for you to experience these decks in your own hands. Every shuffle is a retelling. Every deal is a remembrance. And every game becomes a small echo of the great struggle that shaped Scotland’s destiny.
